Skiathos
- History
The strategic position of the island attracted many
invaders that occasionaly occupied the island.
First were the Pelasgians; then the inhabitans of Halkida, Evia island
where also started to develop vine and olive (around 7-6th
century BC) and created the very first fortified town on the island;
the Cretans, Romans and then Venetians came after and of course pirate
Barbarossa captured the island...
During the war of Independence Skiathos provided a shelter for the
famous hero Kolokotronis and an active member of the Philiki Etairia
(Secret Organization for the Revolution) and became free in 1830 with
the rest of Greece.

dates & facts to remember:
478 BC the Athenian Delian League welcomed Skiathos as a member.

408 BC
after the Peloponnesian War Skiathos became officially
autonomous and independent.
341 BC democracy returns on the island after the Macedonians tyrant
period.
88 BC
the king Mithridates VI burned
and destroyed Skiathos in his war against the Romans.
42 BC the island returns under Athenian domination.
221 AD Skiathos gets under Roman authority. A great period for Skiathos
since there was a lot of development.
1204 AD
Crusaders take over Skiathos and pass it to the Venetians (Gissi
brothers that created the Bourtzi castle @the port).
During the World War II Skiathos Town was damaged by German bombs. On
the 14th of September 1943, the Nazi sank a submarine with
Skiathos
heroes and on the 23rd of August 1944 they burn the island
and executed seven young people; Those important dates are of the most
important dates in the history of the island. Also, those years Kastro
became a refuge for many Greeks, British and Australians.
